Historical milestones of Hallstatt

Earliest traces

Human traces can be found in the Hallstatt region as early as 12,000 BC, with a perforated cave bear bone being the oldest find. The first permanent settlement took place in the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC.

The era of salt production

Hallstatt is famous for its long tradition of salt mining, which began around 2000 BC.
With the start of mining around 1500 BC, Hallstatt became the site of the oldest known salt mine.

Time of the Celts and Romans

The Celts arrived in the area around 400 BC.
A large landslide destroyed the Salzberg valley at that time.
The Romans later took over the region and continued salt mining.

Medieval and modern developments

A Romanesque church was mentioned in Hallstatt in the 12th century.
In 1284, Duke Albrecht of Austria erected a defense tower to protect the Salzberg valley.

In 1734, the preserved body of a prehistoric miner, known as the "Man in the Salt", was discovered in Hallstatt.

In December 1997, the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut cultural landscape was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, underlining the importance of the region as a global cultural and natural heritage site.
